JONNY MALBON - CAREER DETAILS
Jonny Malbon, 33, is based in Cowes on the Isle of Wight. His sailing experience is diverse and extensive. From racing onboard Peter Harrison's Super-yacht, Sojana as bowman, to helming a 26' rib across the Atlantic as part of the first ever Transatlantic Windsurf race, he has dedicated much of his life to time on the ocean.
After leaving University in London, Malbon’s career in the sailing world began at the United Kingdom Sailing Academy on the Isle of Wight as a course tutor, leading teams of students to gain their water-sports instructor tickets in dinghy sailing, power-boating, windsurfing and kayaking.
It was at the Academy that he met Paul Bennett, who offered Malbon his first break in big boat sailing, as the first mate aboard Mike Golding's challenge boat Group 4. After a year onboard and 30,000 miles on the clock, Malbon left to join the Challenge Business as part of the training team for the 2000 BT Global Challenge. He was then promoted to Training Skipper and posted to San Francisco to run the US training programme.
On his return from the US, Malbon was part of the team that ran the hugely successful EDS Atlantic Challenge in September 2001. This Imoca event was a turning point in his career, as he was offered the job of Boat Captain for Ellen MacArthur's Open 60 Kingfisher.
Malbon ran Kingfisher for over 2 years, helping the team to achieve some great results, most notably Ellen's incredible Route du Rhum victory in 2002. He then went on to form a team of young up and coming sailors and campaigned the boat for the summer of 2003 as co-skipper, with Mark Denton, under the Team888 banner. Racing in the Daimler Chrysler North Atlantic Challenge, the Calais Round Britain Open 60 Race, and the Fastnet, the team cut their teeth against some of the best sailors in the world.
After leaving Offshore Challenges, the next few years were filled with a diverse range of sailing. This included setting a new transatlantic record in the ARC as navigator aboard the Volvo 60 Spirit, winning the double, (Cowes week and Cork week 2004) on the Farr 52 Chernikeef 2, and acting as bowman on Peter Harrison's, 115 ft ketch, Sojana.
During this period Malbon also sailed as Watch Captain on Maiden 2 for the delivery to Qatar in the Middle East – a trip that took the Maxi-cat from the UK, through the Med and the Suez Canal, and then on through the Red Sea to Qatar. He then led the refit and re-branding as Boat Captain, and sailed with Brian Thompson and his crew in the Oryx Quest 2005, a non-stop drag race around the world for Maxi multihulls. The team aboard Doha 2006 went on to win the race and claim the $1,000,000 prize, (which they have yet to receive!!).

As a result of the successful partnership with Thompson during the Oryx Quest, Malbon jumped at the opportunity of working for Brian again when Artemis Ocean Racing was conceived. He joined the team as Boat Captain of the Open 60, and stepped up to skipper the boat during Brian's absence for the record-breaking lap of the UK during the Round Britain and Ireland Race 2006.
2007 saw Jonny moving to skipper the Artemis Ocean Racing team, and has an incredibly full season ahead with the launch of the brand new hi-spec, Open 60 Artemis in April, competing in his solo debut in May 2008 in The Artemis Transat, culminating in his race training and preparation for the forthcoming Vendee Globe in November 2008.
“I love sailing, and I feel that it is a real privilege to be able to do something that I enjoy so much as a job. It provides endless opportunities and amazing adventures. That really drives me on to work hard, try and be the best I can and deliver the goods.”
Jonny Malbon: The Profit Hunter
Stock Market vs. the Oceans: Hunting for Profits
The world of professional solo sailing holds a number of synergies for Artemis with respect to their core values and activities; whilst the Artemis Fund Manager must constantly hunt for profits on the stock market, Jonny Malbon’s currency is to hunt for his own profits out at sea, seeking to take miles off his opponents and striving to beat the competition. Both operate alone and are ultimately solely responsible for their decisions and strategies. The hunters are committed to achieving the best results in a professional and secure fashion, trusting their skills and expertise.
The Artemis Manager can never be racy, reckless or decadent when managing a client’s investments; neither can Malbon when at the helm of the Artemis Open 60. Reckless gambles are not options; instead, both make informed decisions based on their experience and knowledge. In striving for success, the ‘Profit Hunters’ must tackle turbulent waters, whether in the economic environment or in the deepest stretches of the Southern Ocean, and come out the other side with a competitive edge.
“I feel extremely lucky to have such a supportive sponsor in Artemis Investment Management. They are giving me the opportunity to achieve my ambitions on the world stage. I take a very professional attitude to my job, skippering an Open 60, and I know that all the staff at Artemis take a similar attitude to delivering returns for their clients. As Profit Hunters, we are all striving to beat the competition and provide the best results we can.”
