GRAHAM 'GRINGO' TOURELL - BOAT CAPTAIN
Graham is 30 years old and is based in Southampton. Originally from Nottingham in the Midlands, it was his love of windsurfing that first attracted him to the ocean at a very early age. After finishing his studies Graham moved to the Isle of Wight where he became a professional watersports instructor at the UK Sailing Academy, and went on to train instructors both in the UK and the Caribbean.
It was at the Academy that Graham and Jonny first met and worked together. After several years instructing, Graham made the move to yachting and trained as a commercial ocean yachtmaster. Shortly afterwards he was offered a job with Mike Golding's team aboard the ‘Group 4' challenge yacht. After only one year he was given the skippers position and he successfully managed and raced the boat. It was here that Gringo's potential was noticed, and he was quickly transferred onto Mike's Finot designed Open 60. This was the beginning of a longstanding relationship with Mike Golding Yacht Racing, working on the Open 60 circuit.
Commonly known to everyone on the circuit as Gringo, Graham has prepared and raced Mikes' boat in all of the IMOCA grand prix events over the years, building up valuable experience in this, the most exciting sailing class on the water. Over the years, the team has enjoyed great success, achieving podium positions in almost every race they competed in.
Gringo has many 1000's of miles racing these incredible machines and has numerous trans-Atlantic crossings under his belt. He has also been responsible for project preparation and shore support for both of Mike Golding's Vendee Globe races. The level of experience, which he brings to the team, is hugely advantageous, and will hopefully help give the boys the best chance possible in this year’s races.
Away from the water, Gringo is a sports enthusiast, competing in the UK triathlon circuit whenever time allows between yacht races. This year Gringo has set his sights on competing in the Etape section of the Tour de France, which is a gruelling 200km race through the French Alps, and is notorious as being the most challenging section of the race!NEWSWIRE
