IAN McCABE - HEAD BOAT BUILDER

Ian is responsible for all composites onboard Artemis Ocean Racing II; in simple terms it means making sure the boat is structurally sound. When AOR II is back onshore, Ian will make any performance gaining modifications as well as look after the general up keep of the boat.  Ian was responsible for overseeing the build of AOR II during its construction at Neville Hutton¹s Boat Builders in Lymington, UK.
 
Ian started his boat building career in 1992 when he completed a 5 year ship wrights apprenticeship at Alan Staley Boat Builders in Faversham, Kent. From there he moved to Plymouth where he joined Bridgend Boat Company, building 42 foot Nelson Power Boats.  His professional career started with the BT Global Challenge in 2000/2001, where he was part of the shore team looking after all of the Challenge yachts as they came into port throughout the race. Before joining Artemis Ocean Racing Ian was part of the build team for the Ericsson Open 70 for the Volvo Ocean Race 2005/06. Previous to this he worked for Mike Golding on his Open 60 ECOVER, Ian was part of the shore team as boat builder for the 2004/05 Vendée Globe campaign, this also included the 2005 TJV & Calais Round Britain, as well as the 2004 Transat, where Mike took 1st in the Open 60 class.
 
His other experience includes working for Ellen MacArthur on her record breaking B&Q trimaran, Kingfisher Open 60 and the Kingfisher II Maxi-cat Jules Verne Project. Ian also has extensive experience in the America¹s Cup, where he worked as part of the build and shore team for GBR Challenge and One World during the 2002/03 America¹s Cup in New Zealand.
